Since its inception, CHAVÓN has fomented the arts through its Artists in Residence Program, which aims to serve as a platform for educational and cultural interchange between Dominican and international artists. Resident artists—painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, writers, musicians, and architects—from different countries come together to live and work in Altos de Chavón for a specified period of time.
Located within the world-renowned five-star resort complex Casa de Campo and high atop a plateau overlooking the Chavón River, Altos de Chavón’s lush natural surroundings have served as a creative setting for hundreds of artists.
Participating artists receive housing in a private, fully furnished apartment and are provided a studio for their personal use. During their stay, they interact with other artists, sharing experiences and ideas in the different disciplines; offer lectures; and develop dialogues with members of the local community. The Artist in Residence Program has also become a rich source of knowledge for The School of Design students, as the artists also have the opportunity to interact with them and teach at CHAVÓN.
For almost four decades, the AiR program has hosted more than 200 renowned artists such as Elvira Bach, Larry Rivers, and Roberto Juarez; writers Julia Alvarez, Jerzy Kosinski, and Aya de León; and ceramic artist Emma Luna. From the New York Academy of Art, Ian Factor, Jessica Augier, and Andrés de la Torre, and from the Davidoff Art Initiative, Jan Peter Hammer, Alia Farid, Alejandra Villasmil, Mathilde Rosier and Paul Maheke, to name a few.
